The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine is a diversified journal with an objective to bring together clinical specialties into a single information space, to establish scientific communications, to integrate into the global scientific process, and to translate advanced scientific findings into applied medicine. The journal focuses on provision of the research, informational, analytical, and methodological assistance to specialists in their professional activities and unveils the latest achievements of the medical science.
The modern medical science tends to develop specialization and to divide the clinical science into field-specific areas, with the increasing role of the internal medicine in the integration of studies. A multifaceted, interdisciplinary therapeutic approach and joint efforts of various medical specialists are required to improve patient care.
The target audience of The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine includes specialists in various clinical medicine areas, such as general medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, surgery, neurology, infectious diseases, pulmonology, immunology, etc., and employees of medical universities, institutes for advanced medical education, and scientific research institutions. As generalization of scientific and practical medical achievements is required, the journal publishes both original articles devoted to epidemiology, etiology, and specific pathophysiologic mechanisms of various diseases and summaries of the most relevant studies that set out the areas for development of a particular area of medicine.
- Preparing a Manuscript for Submission
Submission of a manuscript to the Editorial Office of The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine constitutes acceptance of this rules by the Author(s).
Manuscripts in Russian and/or English are accepted by the journal for review.
Submission of an article to The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine implies that:
- the article has not been published previously in any other journal;

It is recommended to make statistical processing and provide the data presentation according to Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals, Ann Intern Med 1997, 126: 36–47. It is advisable to prepare statistics section in accordance with the special guidelines (for example, Editorial Charter of the Board of Cardiological Journals https://scardio.ru/content/publication/Buklet_150x150_v3.pdf; or recommendations of European Heart Journal.
- Types and Volume of Manuscripts
Clinical guidelines (reviews), lectures, original articles, reviews, and case reports. The expected date of presentation is required if the submission is a post-graduate or doctoral thesis.
The editors recommend the authors limit the volume of the manuscript (including sources of literature, tables, images and captions) as follows:
Clinical guidelines (reviews), consensus statements. Volume – up to 8,000 words. Can be supported with images and tables. An abstract is not necessary.
Original articles. The volume of the article is up to 4,000 words. The article should be structured and contain 6 mandatory paragraphs (Objective, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, and Keywords). The structure of the article's abstract should correspond to the structure of the article.
Lectures – clinically directed reviews performed by a broad-based specialist, including sections on epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic methods, treatment and prevention. The volume of text is up to 5,000 words with an unstructured abstract.
Literature reviews – summarized information on the latest achievements in one of the fields of medicine, presented by specialists who know the described achievements in detail; have a narrower specialized focus than lectures. The volume of the text is up to 6,000 words with an unstructured abstract.
Clinical analysis. The volume of text is up to 4,000 words with an unstructured abstract.
The articles should contain images and/or tables for visual presentation of text information.
The journal accepts original clinical trials of phase 2, 3 and 4. Literature reviews should be based on sources no older than 10 years.
- Manuscript Completeness and Design
A manuscript submitted should comply with the ICMJE's Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals.
The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine adheres to the Your Paper, Your Way principle, which simplifies the requirements for manuscripts at submission. Authors can first submit manuscripts to The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine in their preferred format without any word limits. Proper formatting adjustments come only after the initial round of peer review in preparing for printing.
- Initial Submission of a Manuscript
The authors who submit a manuscript for the first time can use the journal's editorial system to upload a file with the manuscript without attaching other mandatory documents. There are no formatting restrictions (incl. on article volume).
The article should be written with the following elements: a title page containing article title and author affiliations, an abstract, keywords, all sections depending on the article type, ethical considerations of the work (where necessary), disclosure of any conflict of interest, contribution of the authors, and references. If the paper contains any figures or tables they should be included in the text with captions. Resolution of figures should allow assessment of their significance for the paper submitted in the review process.
- Manuscript Formatting at the Revision Stage
Any manuscript that has been preliminary approved should be formatted in accordance with the journal's requirements and be accompanied with the necessary supporting documents alongside with the article text. All manuscripts are submitted in electronic form through the editorial system on The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine website. The submitted manuscript should contain the following documents:
- Text of the article
- Cover Letter addressed to the journal's Editor-in-Chief
- Consent form for the processing of personal data filled in and signed by each author
- Information about each author
- Scanned copy of the manuscript's title page signed by all authors (when the authors of the manuscript work for different institutions or in different cities or countries several copies of the title page are allowed; in such case signatures of all authors must be available to the editors of the journal) in PDF format
- Graphical abstract (if any)
- Other documents at the discretion of the author(s)
Text of the Article
The article should contain the following sections (except when a certain section is inappropriate due to the research specifics):
Title page
Text of the article
References
Tables and figures with captions
All pages must be numbered consecutively.
The title page must contain:
- initials and last names of all authors, and ORCID ID of each author (if any);
- article title;
- full name of the institution and division (department or laboratory) which has conducted the research stating the departmental subordination;
- city and country;
- contribution of each author;
- article abstract;
- keywords;
- list of abbreviations;
- disclosure of any conflict of interest and sources of funding;
- compliance with ethical principles; and
- acknowledgements (if any).
All information must be in Russian and English.
Authors are people who were identified by the scientific group as the main participants of the presented work and who have agreed to take the responsibility for their work. In addition to the responsibility for his own part of the work, the author should be able to indicate which of his co-authors are responsible for other parts of the work.
The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine adopts the following authorship criteria:
- Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work.
- Drafting the work or reviewing it critically for important intellectual content.
- Final approval of the version to be published.
- Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work.
The list of authors must not include people who are not the authors of the article. The author order in the article is determined by the group of authors. If the authors request that any author be removed from or an extra author be added to a manuscript after submission, an explanation must be submitted in writing with the signed consents to the requested changes from all authors, as well as from the author who should be removed or added.
When author names are specified in Russian the last name should come after initial letters of the first name and patronymic name (e.g. П.С. Иванов, С.И. Петров, И.П. Сидоров).
When author names are specified in English in the article the following format should be followed: "First name, initial letter of patronymic name, last name" (e.g. Ivan I. Ivanov).
The article title should be informative and short enough (150-200 characters or less) and reflect to content of the research. Abbreviations in article titles should be avoided.
Authors' institutions with their departmental subordination should be indicated in accordance with the data on the e-library portal.
It should be indicated what institution each of the authors works by figures in the upper case next to the last name of the author and the name of the institution. If all authors work in one institution it is not necessary to indicate the place of work of every author separately.
All information should be given in Russian and English. Authors' last names in English should be given as indicated in a foreign passport or in any previous publications. If the author has no foreign passport and/or publications the last name should be transliterated according to the BSI system. Official English versions of organization names should be given.
Author contributions should be specified with the use of the CRediT taxonomy (Contributor Roles Taxonomy - https://credit.niso.org/ Russian translation https://www.hfb-mgupp.com/jour/article/view/169/183). Permission to be acknowledged should be obtained from all acknowledged individuals.
Each article should be accompanied with a summary (abstract) in both Russian and English, of at least 200 words each.
The abstract of an original article should have the following structure: objective, materials and methods, results, conclusion. All sections are highlighted in the text. The abstract of all other articles (review, lecture, clinical analysis) should include the summary of the basic concept of the article. The abstract should not contain references to the list of references and abbreviations should be avoided, whenever possible. The abstract should fully comply with the content of the work. The meaning and structure of the English abstract of the article should correspond to the Russian version and be competent in terms of the English language. It is not allowed to use electronic translators without further editing for translations.
Key words or phrases in Russian and English (no more than 8) should be given at the end of the abstract (summary) in order of importance. To select keywords in English, the thesaurus of the United States Medical Library - Medical Subject Headings - MeSH should be used (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mesh).
It is necessary to make a list of abbreviations. When compiling a list of abbreviations for the article, including text, tables and figures, only those used by the author 3 or more times should be included. At first mentioning of the terms constantly used in the article (but not in the title of the article or in its abstract), it is necessary to give their full names with their shortened forms in brackets, and to use only the abbreviations further, but their usage should be minimal. Abbreviations that are only used in tables and figures and are not used in the text should not be included in the list of abbreviations. However they should be expanded in a note to the table or figure. Abbreviations should be generally accepted and understandable to the reader, in accordance with the standards generally accepted in the scientific literature. Abbreviations that coincide in spelling with others that have a different meaning should be avoided. The list of abbreviations is arranged in alphabetical order. First, abbreviations to be expanded should be indicated and then their interpretation after a dash.
You must specify whether there is any conflict of interest for all authors. Conflict of interest implies the existence of any ties and/or personal interest that may potentially affect the results, interpretation of the data obtained, their objective perception, as well as non-financial interest related to the issues and/or materials discussed in the article.
If no conflict of interest exists the following should be stated: "The authors state that this work, its theme, subject and content do not affect competing interests".
Section "Funding Sources" contains disclosure by the authors of any possible relationships with industrial and financial organizations, which can lead to a conflict of interests with regard to the content of the manuscript. It is also desirable to list all funding sources, such as grants, sponsors, etc.
Section "Compliance with Ethical Principles" contains the number and date of a report of the Local Ethics Committee that has approved the research, information on obtainment from patients of informed consents to participation in the research and/or publication of a case history, clinical trial registration details, etc.
Patients have the right to privacy and confidentiality of their personal data. Any identifying information, including patient names, initials, or hospital numbers, should not be published in the form of written descriptions, photographs, etc. unless this information has a great scientific value and the patient (or patient's legal representative) gives a written consent to the publication. Complete anonymity is difficult to achieve, however, and informed consent should be obtained if there is any doubt. For example, a black band covering patient's eyes on photos is not a sufficient guarantee of anonymity.
The author(s) should archivate consents and report to the journal in writing that patient's written consent has been obtained and archivated. Obtainment of informed consent from the patient should be also indicated in this section.
Contributors to the work who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in the Acknowledgements section. Permission to be acknowledged should be obtained from all acknowledged individuals.
Text of the Article
An article submitted should be in Microsoft Word format (has .doc, .docx or .rtf extension). It should be typed using the Times New Roman font, font size – 12 pt, line spacing – 1.5, and margins 2 cm on all sides. The SI system is used for processing the materials, % is put through a space from number, p value is written with a dot: p < 0.0001; n value is written with a lowercase letter (n=20); >, <, ±, =, +, and - with numerical values are written without a space; and "year" or "years" values are written as 2018 or 2002-2014 respectively.
Use of Artificial Intelligence
The Editorial Office allows using the artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technologies in the production of submitted work (for details see the Artificial Intelligence Policy). However authors should expressly declare this use of the AI technologies permitted under the Artificial Intelligence Policy.
Manuscript Originality
The editors expect that manuscripts submitted for review are written in original style, without using previously published texts. An exception may be fragments and sentences, designed with the use of references to the primary source. It is also allowed to copy classifications and regulated methodical materials (with references to primary sources). All works submitted undergo similarity check through Antiplagiat system; originality of the manuscript must be at least 75%.
Self-citing is not encouraged (except where necessary), but anyway it should be 10% of all sources in the reference list.
Alongside with the Russian text, at the discretion of the author, a full-text version of the article in English translated by the author can be submitted.
References
The list of references should be made in accordance with GOST R 7.0.5-2008. The author is responsible for the accuracy of the list of references.
Literature references are numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text by bracketed numbers [1] or [1, 2]. Each reference in the list is on a new line. All documents referred to in the text should be included in the list of references.
Original articles should contain no more than 15 sources of literature, lectures – up to 80 sources of literature, literature reviews – up to 50 sources of literature, and case reports – no more than 5 sources.
References to works that are not in the list of references and vice versa; references to unpublished works, textbooks, as well as decades-old works (>10 years) are not allowed. The only exception can be rare highly informative works. Theses and thesis abstracts should not be referred to; it is better to refer to articles published on the basis of thesis research. Documents, such as orders, GOSTs, medical and sanitary rules, methodological guidelines, ordinances, sanitary and epidemiological rules, standards, and federal laws, should be referred to in the text in parentheses.
Bibliographic descriptions should contain last names of up to three authors, then it should be indicated "и др." in Russian articles or "et al." in foreign articles.
The output should be given as follows:
- when citing articles from journals: last name and initials of the authors, the name of the journal, year, volume, number, pages (from and to).
- when citing articles from collections: last name and initials of the authors, the title of the article, the title of the collection, place of publication, year of publication, pages (from and to).
If it is necessary to cite authors in the text, the last name of the first author with initials, and the year of work should be given. Example: Smith A.A., et al. (2018).
In order to increase citation of authors the journal applies transliteration of sources in Russian with the use of official encodings as follows: authors and the name of the journal are transliterated in Latin, and the title of the article - by semantic transliteration (translation into English). The name of a source where the work has been published is transliterated in Latin if the source (journal) has no official name in English. At the end of each translation of the source indicate [In Russian].
The author(s) is (are) responsible for the accuracy of the information provided in the list of references. The list of references should conform to the format recommended by the National information Standards organization — NISO adopted by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for databases (Library’s MEDLINE/PubMed database) NLM: http://www.nlm.nih. gov/citingmedicine. The names of periodicals can be abbreviated. Usually, such form is adopted by publishers independently; it can be found on the website of the publisher or in the list of abbreviations Index Medicus.
If a digital object identifier (doi) is assigned to a source from the list of references, it must be indicated in the link.

Tables and Figures with Captions
Figures (graphs, diagrams) submitted in electronic form should be in TIFF, BMP, JPEG, or РРТ format. Any program that supports these formats can be used. Figures should be high quality. Figures are numbered separately from tables. There should be a reference to each figure in the article. The number of symbols in the figure should be kept to a minimum, all explanations should be given in the caption.
The article may be accompanied by a minimum number of drawings necessary for understanding the text, with captions in Russian and English.
When publishing images of people, values of human dignity should be kept in mind: avoid images of people who are in a struggling or vulnerable position.
Any micro- and x-ray photographs should be 6×9 cm in size.
Tables are placed in the text or at the end of the article. Each table should have a title in Russian and English and a corresponding reference to it in the text. Table columns should be free from blank spaces or unexplained dashes. Tables should be compact, their headings should correspond to the content of the fields, the text of the tables should also be duplicated in English. Tables should clearly indicate dimensions of the indicators and the form of data presentation (M±m; M±SD; Me; Mo; percentiles, etc.) All numbers, totals and percentages should be carefully verified, and also correspond to the mention in the text. They must be processed statistically and explained in the text with references to a particular table. Any abbreviations which are not mentioned in the article, or symbols (*, **, etc.) in the table should be decrypted in footnotes to the table, both in Russian and English.
If a reference to a figure or table is included in the sentence, the full spelling of the word "figure 1", "table 1" is used; if the words are enclosed in brackets, the abbreviation is used (fig. 1), (tab. 1).
Information about Permissions
If the article contains illustrations which were taken from other illustration sources or tables without changes or adaptation, a copy of written permission of the right holder is required. For illustrations and tables you should specify "Adapted from". The letters with permissions for reproduction of a text or illustration should be attached to the manuscript.
Cover Letter Addressed to the Journal's Editor-in-Chief
A cover letter should be addressed to the journal's Editor-in-Chief – M.D., Prof. Lyudmila Yu. Ilchenko. Use of an official letterhead of the submitting institution is advisable, but is left to the discretion of the group of authors. The cover letter should include details of the work submission to The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine, statement that the manuscript is not considered by another publishing house; has not been previously published; the manuscript contains a full disclosure of research funding and possible conflicts of interest in the text and in the abstract; the manuscript has been read and unconditionally approved by all authors; the authors are responsible for all aspects of the work, including accuracy of the materials presented in the manuscript, and certify their accuracy and flawlessness.
The expected date of presentation is required if the submission is a post-graduate or doctoral thesis.
Consent for Personal Data Processing
Subject to the requirements of Federal Law No. 152-FZ "On Personal Data" dated July 27, 2006 each author must provide a consent for personal data processing. A scanned copy of such consent that has been drafted and signed by each author should be included in the set of supporting documents to the manuscript. The Editorial Office strongly recommends using the consent form available on the journal's website.

Graphical Abstract
A graphical abstract (summary) is not a strong requirement, however it may draw attention to the article and help readers identify more quickly which articles are most relevant to their research interests, and hence the graphical abstract upgrades the popularity and citation of the article. The graphical abstract is shown online on the website of the journal, but is not published in paper or electronic version of the journal.
The authors who prepare a graphical abstract are required to submit two information files in Russian and English.
The graphical abstract is a file containing a .JPEG, .JPG or .PNG image. The image resolution is 300 dpi. Information about the authors, title of the article or such heading as "graphical abstract" should not be added to the graphical abstract.
Please follow the instructions below when you make up graphical abstracts:
Avoid superfluous explanatory text: a graphical abstract should reflect main findings of the research paper rather than duplicate it;
Avoid using small graphical elements which can be blurred because the image will be scaled up on the website;
A graphical abstract of the article should not duplicate any previous graphical abstract.
Showing a key figure or a table as a graphical abstract is permitted, but not recommended by the editors.
Examples of graphical abstracts to medical articles are available at Graphical abstract (elsevier.com).
- How to Submit an Article for Consideration
The manuscripts are accepted only in electronic form and should be sent through the editorial system on the website: www.medarhive.ru. Select "Start submission" button and follow the instructions. No manuscript sent otherwise, including to the e-mail address of the Editorial Office, will be accepted.
- Interaction between Journal and Authors
The Editorial Office corresponds with the designated corresponding author, however, if the authors wish so, letters can be sent to all authors whose e-mail was specified.
All incoming manuscripts are initially checked for compliance with the formal requirements. At this stage, the article may be returned to the author(s) for review with a request to eliminate errors or add missing data. At this stage, the article may also be rejected because it does not meet the journal's objectives or area of focus, lacks originality, or has little scientific value. The Editorial Office has the right to refuse in publication or to send its comments to the article, which must be corrected by the author before the peer review.
All articles submitted to The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine undergo mandatory double-blind review: a reviewer receives the manuscript without knowing names and affiliations of the authors, and the author receives the reviewer's opinion without knowing the name of the reviewer. Articles are reviewed by external reviewers who are the leading experts in a particular field, as well as the members of the editorial board and the editorial council of the journal. In controversial or complicated cases, several specialists and the Editor-in-Chief may be involved in the peer reviewing process.
The peer review process usually takes 4-8 weeks from the date of sending to the reviewer, but it can be extended in some cases. All manuscripts are sent to at least two reviewers.
Authors who receive the article for making corrections have two (2) weeks to send the corrected article back to the editors. If during this period the author fails to notify the Editorial Office of the planned actions, the Editorial Office may change the submission date of the article, request that the article be resubmitted, or refuse to publish. Minor corrections of a stylistic, nomenclatural or formal nature are made to the article without the consent of the authors.
In case the article has already been corrected by the authors 3 times, but still requires corrections requested by the editors, it is rejected with no right to re-submission.
After the peer review, the manuscript is sent to a statistics expert for evaluation (if necessary).
The author will be notified of a negative review by e-mail.
A positive review is not a sufficient basis for publication of the article. A final decision on publication is made by the editorial board.
The Editorial Office reserves the right to publish articles approved for print in the form and sequence that they seem appropriate for the journal.
The order of publication of articles is established in accordance with the editorial plan of the journal. At the same time, subject to the requirements of the Higher Attestation Commission, postgraduate and doctoral theses (if indicated in the cover letter) have priority.
Published issues of the journal are publicly available on the Internet. No author's copy is sent by the Editorial Office.
- Revision of Decisions of an Editor/Reviewer
If the author disagrees with the opinion of a reviewer and/or editor, or a particular comment, he/she can challenge the decision. To do this, the author should:
- make corrections to the manuscript in accordance with the reasonable comments of the reviewers and editors; and
- expressly state their position and justification on the issue in dispute in a notice of appeal.
The notice of appeal must contain the author's name and the manuscript's title and number. If the reviewer/editor is not satisfied with the author's justifications the appeal should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief. Decision of the Editor-in-Chief is final. One appeal with respect to one manuscript will be considered.
The editors promote re-submission of the manuscripts that could potentially be accepted, but have been rejected due to some necessary significant changes or collecting additional data. They are willing to explain in details the necessary corrections to the manuscript in order for it to be accepted for publication.
- Actions of Editors in Case of Plagiarism, Data Fabrication or Falsification
The editors are guided by the COPE Guidelines in case when any author misconduct, plagiarism, data fabrication or falsification is detected.
According to The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine Research misconduct implies any actions of a researcher, including improper handling of study objects or deliberate manipulation of scientific information so that it ceases to properly reflect the observed study, or conduct that does not comply with the recognized ethical and scientific standards.
However, any honest mistakes or honest discrepancies in the research design or implementation, as well as interpretation or evaluation of the research methods or results, or non-research misconduct cannot be considered as misconduct by The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine.
- Article Revocation (Retraction)
Retraction is a mechanism for correcting the literature and alerting readers to articles that contain such seriously flawed or erroneous content or data that their findings and conclusions cannot be relied upon. Unreliable content or data may result from honest error, naïve mistakes, or research misconduct.
The main purpose of retraction is to correct the literature and ensure its integrity rather than to punish the authors.
Reasons for article retraction include:
- detected improper copying (plagiarism) in publication;
- redundant publication;
- detected falsifications or fabrications in the work (e.g. experimental data manipulation);
- detected major error (e.g. misinterpretation of results) that put in question its scientific value;
- incorrect authorship (contributors who deserve authorship were missed; contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship were listed);
- failure to disclose a major competing interest (and other infringements of the publication ethics);
- re-publication of the article without the consent of its author; or
- omission of the peer review process of the article.
Retraction can be initiated by editors, author, organization, or private individual. The Editorial Board of The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine decides whether to retract the article or not.
A retracted article is labeled “Article retracted”, and the information on the reasons for the retraction is placed on the webpage of the article. Information on article retraction is sent to databases where the journal is indexed.
- Publication Fee
Publication in the journal is free for the authors. The Editorial Office does not charge fees for the preparation, placement, and printing of materials and does not pay royalties to the authors.
All articles accepted by The Russian Archives of Internal Medicine for publication will be published under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial (CC BY-NC) 4.0 license (creativecommons.org).
